OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF SCKLM 2011

The most anticipated marathon in Malaysia – the Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon 2011 was officially launched on 14 February 2011 at Double Hill by Hilton Kuala Lumpur, the official Hotel for the event.

Officiated by the Minister of Youth & Sports Malaysia, YB Dato’ Sri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, the marathon will be held on 26 June 2011. This event is in its 3rd Edition with Standard Chartered Bank as the Title Sponsor while Golazo Sdn Bhd and City Hall Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) work hand-in-hand as joint organizer.

Rainer Biemens, Project Director of Golazo Sdn Bhd said that SCKLM started with a modest beginning of 800 full marathoners in 2009 and saw an increased by 220% to 1,900 full marathoners in 2010. They aimed to attract 2,500 full marathoners and look forward to host more than 25,000 runners which comprise both local and international runners.

When asked if last year’s winners, Kenyans in particular will be back to defend their title, Rainer said the event will not look ‘international’ without the presence of the Kenyans. There were 1,000 running tourists from 45 different countries in 2010.

This year tagline – Run With Us is an evolution to the past year’s tagline, Run Your Race (in 2009) and Run As One (in 2010) which emphasize the inclusive and unifying spirit of the race.

SCKLM also offered the highest prize money amongst all marathons in Malaysia with a total cash prize of USD100,000. SCKLM is also touted as a Young Race with 83% of runners below the age of 40 in the previous years.

Osman Murad, CEO and Managing Director of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Berhad said that the bank has a very strong attribution towards the marathon whereby the staffs take prides in running the event also is a platform for thousands of people to feel extra ordinary in this Greatest Race on Earth!

The Standard Chartered Marathon spread over nine countries around the globe namely in Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai, Nairobi, Falkland Islands and Jersey, Channel Islands.

All of the marathons adopt a similar philosophy with a good cause and unique running route.

Will there be any changes to the running route in SCKLM 2011?

Honorary Secretary of FTAAA, Mr. S Vegithuman said that they have sent a request and awaiting approval from the police traffic to start the 10km and Fun Run at Padang Merbuk and finish the race at Dataran Merdeka. This is to reduce the congestion at Dataran Merdeka when top elite runners heading back to the finish line.

Mr. S Vegithuman has more than 20 years of experience in organizing and officiating road races in the Federal Territory. With his vast experience and passion for athletic event, his contribution towards the race is most welcome.

As an organiser of a run in KL many years ago, I found it difficult to deal with Vegi and his cohorts. He charges heaps of money for "volunteering" and give very little in return. I hope SCKLM don't have to deal with the same problems as us. It is better for PM to co-organise this with SC than them.

anon,

Vegi is just representing FTAAA, the state technical authority.

indeed road races has evolved over the years and runners are more demanding and spoilt for choice. i'm glad that FTAAA now has fully resumed their role as Technical state body instead of being a road race organiser.

if each play their role well, we'll truly see better managed sports event.
