The OBJECTIVE

To pay tribute to all the Mountain Guides of Mount Kinabalu (also knwn as Malim Gunung)
To honor the 4 unsung heroes who give their lives for the safety of climbers whom they regarded as their guests
To raise fund for the families and next of kins of the fallen Malim of Mount Kinabalu
To be in solidarity with the people of Sabah especially those who are directly affected by the earthquake

The BACKGROUND

June 5, 2015 at 07:15
The earthquake struck Ranau, Sabah with a magnitude of 6.0 which lasted for 30 seconds.  Eighteen people died  with most of the deaths being Singaporean students from Tanjong Katong Primary School, while about 137 other people who were climbing the mountain were stranded, but were subsequently rescued.
As a result, from the earthquake, most areas in the Kinabalu Park have been closed temporarily until the situation is cleared and undergoing repairs .

Mountain guides that made a difference.
At about 4pm, the mountain guides collectively decided to lead the group to safety themselves, after not having received any word of help that was coming for them.
"I don't think the climbers would have been able to make it through the night. Most of them were wearing thin layers of clothing. They were hungry and thirsty. We either died waiting, or died trying. We chose to die trying," said Mr Kintai, one of the mountain guides leading the group.
Most of the mountain guides live in the villages surrounding Mount Kinabalu, and depend on the climbing tours for income for their families.
One of the mountain guides identified as Joseph Selungin, 33, was found along with two of his climbers. According to eyewitnesses, Joseph appeared to be using his body to shield two of his climbers from the falling rocks. He is survived by his wife and two children aged four and two.  He promised to return by June 12 to celebrate their wedding anniversary.

The other 3 mountain guides who perished are Robbi Sappingi, Valerian Joannes and Ricky Masirin

STANDARD CHARTERED KL MARATHON: QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

(Yg Berbahagia Datuk Seri Hj Ahmad Phesal, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur)

It’s now officially launched and officiated by the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Yang Berbahagia Datuk Seri Hj Ahmad Phesal! And within two hours. . .. .  more than 5,300 entries being taken up and the numbers keep going up!

Don’t take too long to consider or you’ll miss the boat.

This is my favourite hometown event into its 7th edition. It will be held at Dataran Merdeka on October 4, 2015. The running route will remain the same as in 2014 where full marathoners will have to run on the AKLEH alleviated highway and DUKE highway then through those familiar double hills route along Langgak Tunku and Jalan Parlimen before making its way back to Dataran Merdeka.
Mahendra Gursahani

“As the proud title sponsor of the Standard Chartered KL Marathon, we are delighted to be involved in an event that has put Malaysia on the sporting world map. We also hope to inspire and motivate runners to give something back to the communities and support a good cause in line with “Run for a Cause”, the theme for the Standard Chartered KL Marathon,” said Mahendra Gursahani, Managing Director and CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia.

To celebrate Standard Chartered Bank’s 140th anniversary, the Bank recently ran a contest on SCKLM’s Instagram account inviting participants to submit the best photos of the Marathon. A total of 140 winners were selected, and they won complimentary entries to the Full Marathon.

Rainer Biemans
The Race Director, Rainer Biemans of Dirigo Events Sdn Bhd (the event owner & organiser) said that participation of runners is capped at 35,000 inorder for runners to enjoy the best running experience. He added that the space within Dataran Merdeka could not take on more runners unless the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur extend the perimeter surrounding Dataran Merdeka to accommodate additional runners. Until then, Dirigo Events will capped the numbers at 35,000. This is also to facilitate the logistic and most importantly the safety of all runners on event day.

And this is the reason SCKLM will remain as the BEST marathon in the country as the organiser continuously working towards the betterment of the event year after year.

So, will there be any surprises along both highways, namely the AKLEH & DUKE? I am so looking forward to it!

ADIDAS has been chosen as the official apparel brand. Salonpas, GP Battery and Repucom join the list of sponsors with the returning Gold Sponsors, MSIG Insurance and Honda Malaysia, as well as Official Partners – Seiko, Pacific Regency Hotel Group & F&N in completing the list of supporting brands.
