BOH ECO TRAIL 2016

28-May-2016
BOH Plantations
Bukit Cheeding, Selangor D.E.

8km Trail - Non Competitive

My first (ever) official trail run. Oh....my . . its 8km! I got no clue at all about this trail and I was quite nervous.

But firstly gotta thank Benz Azurie Malik, The Race Director of The Marathon Company for the invite. And of course to Evelyn Ang Loo & her hubby Dennis Loo for so ever generous in offering me the ride to Bukit Cheeding. Ohhh. .  and Marlina for putting my name in the list.

Come Friday and I'm kind of regret accepting the invite. At 2am I was still wondering if I can actually complete the run. OK. Evelyn and Dennis will be picking me up at 4.30am. So, at 3.00am I took a quick bath and change. Packed a bottle of Lucozade sport drinks and some sweets (yaaaa .. . I am taking this as just another makanthon) just in case (just in case...) they run out of water or there is lack of food to take me through the course.

Fast forward . . . . it was quite a long ride. Took us more than an hour passing through some winding road, industrial area and unknown housing area. At about 6.30am, we arrived at the destination. It's still a little cold out there. Looking at the crowd .. . probably slightly more than 500 runners turned up. Set amidst tea bushes interspersed with tall coconut and palm trees, this is a rare opportunity for the public to run through the BOH's Tea Garden and the restricted section of the adjacent Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve.

All proceeds from the registration fee totalling RM28,000 were channeled to Global Environment Centre (GEC), a regional non-profit organisation in support of their Peatland Forest Ranger Programme to raise awareness of peat swarm forest conservation among younger generation.

The Run
The run was flagged off at about 7.45am. It was
a cold gloomy morning and the sky threatened to pour down earlier but fortunately weather was just perfect for the morning till the end. Love the greens surrounding. Mild elevations and later part of the route we get to run into the forest reserve.

There were sufficient signages along the route. Volunteers made up of runners, plantations workers and rangers from the forestry were friendly and cheerful. Love that positive energy in them that make your run seems so easy and fun.

The Crews
Crews are the backbone of an event. The photos below speak a thousand words. Well done!

The Special Station
The best was the Coconut drink station. Coconuts fresh from the plantation were served to all runners.

The Orang Asli
The orang asli were given a part in the program to showcase their products and made a short
performance. I wish they were given a more significant role to play in the future than just to
showcase some very basic orang asli produce. A bigger pavilion should be allocated to give the general public an in depth existence of the orang asli, the rightful people of this land who has been sidelined and marginalised for a very long time. It would have been even more meaningful if each runners is given a headwear to put on while running the course. I would be more than happy to part with a few more ringgit to put that on and all the collections being channeled to them (the maker).

Wish the safety tape (candy tape) be replaced by some of the handy works made by the orang asli to retain the nature outlook.

Just a little disappointment in not having a hot cup of BOH tea at the race village. Was expecting that as part of the refreshment be it before the start of the race and after the race. Iced drinks is good to cool down the body but a hot cup of tea is great to get the taste on the freshness of the tea.

Overall, the run is well managed. I'll rate the run 9/10. Kudos to the Race Director and the team for their great effort and I'll definitely run it again.

Press Release

It’s Official!

Energizer Night Race 2014 is Malaysia’s Largest Night Race

Full registration achieved in just three weeks, all eyes now on race day

Kuala Lumpur, 16 June 2014 – The Energizer Night Race 2014 achieved full registration on 11th June and is now officially The Largest Night Race in Malaysia! The fourth installment of the Energizer Night Race is set to be the most spectacular night run with each and every runner sporting the signature Energizer 3-LED Headlight to create a ‘River of Light’ at Kuala Lumpur’s iconic Dataran Merdeka on 9th August.

“We’re thrilled that The Energizer Night Race 2014 reached full registration within 21 days of opening. It will be the first large scale night race at Dataran Merdeka and it’s all about Positivenergy. We’re all highly motivated by the response from the running community and can’t wait to greet everyone at the starting line in two months’ time,” said Mike Foong, Managing Director of Energizer Malaysia and Singapore.

Together with race organizer Twenty First Century Sports Sdn Bhd, collaboration partner Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), and sanctioning body Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Athletic Association (FTKLAA); the race registration was launched on the 22nd May. Its initial closing date was set for 8th July.

In that spirit, I’m calling on all Energizer Night Race supporters to join in the fun at Dataran Merdeka where we’ll have activities by Energizer and its sponsors to engage not only the runners but also the public. So even if you’re not running, be prepared for high-energy fun and interactive activities on that evening,” added Foong.

STANDARD CHARTERED KL MARATHON 2014 - DOWN MEMORY LANE

Lets take a walk down memory lane. . . . . . .

SCKLM made its first appearance in my hometown Kuala Lumpur on June 28, 2009. That was my first ever marathon which took me almost 7 long hours under the hot sun to complete. It was a bitter sweet experience with plenty of rooms for improvement.

In 2010, I decided not to run but instead join a few other runners as support team. June Malik initiated the Full Marathon Virgins support team and we put up a 'stall' at KM36 offering food and drinks to marathoners especially those who ran beyond 5 hours. Joined by Kash, we also had motivational boards and signage to give them that final push.

I love the fact that the Organiser has been increasing the participation figure conservatively over the years focusing more on improving the delivery system of the race starting from the registration, running clinics, race packs collection, medic assistance, water station and every other aspects of the race.

Oh .. .  and SCKLM has been my favorite event not because it is my home ground marathon but this is the only marathon that make it possible for all to experience Kuala Lumpur city on foot. Above that this is also the only road race marathon that allowed me to stop over at the various eatery outlets such as the 24 hours convenient shops along Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Ampang as well as teh tarik and mini market along Jalan Ipoh for my 'breakfast'. Yes, you read it right. I do stopped at those outlets for drinks & food.

SCKLM is not just a road race but have contributed much to the society and the nation with its charitable causes. It has also contributed to the tourism industry with over 50 nationalities flying in to be part of this event.

SCKLM is back and its taking place on October 12, 2014. Mark this day and lets rock the Kuala Lumpur city loud!

BREAKDOWN OF PARTICIPATION - SCKLM 2012

The organising team of the Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon has made every effort to increase and generate interest among the running community to run the 42.195km year after year. This surely reflected well on the title and rightfully they can claim this as the largest and biggest Marathon running in Malaysia.

There is no easy way to complete a 42.195km but it is not impossible with the right support from all relevant parties particularly the Ministry of Youth & Sports, Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the Traffic Police. The Running community and the Public in general also can play an equally important role for this healthy sport.

Just 34 days to the big day. Are you ready to take on the City that Never Sleep on foot?

As usual, I'll be in my tortoise pace roaming the town on foot 'legally' (Thank You SCKLM for the opportunity) checking in to the various local food outlets, taking advantage of the 6 hours on the road. Remember to carbo load and hydrate well before the race.

See you on 24 June 2012 at Dataran Merdeka!
