Celebrating their success, they are hosting the first ever Intermark Charity Tower Run 2012 on 7^th July 2012 (Saturday). The beneficiaries of this run will be two charity organisations : SOS Children’s Villages and Shelter Homes.

SOS Children’s Villages is the world's largest orphan and abandoned children's charity and aims to provide a new family and home for more than 78,000 children in 500 Children's Villages in 124 countries. Shelter Homes which is located in Malaysia, this year, will be embarking on the theme of “Education for the Betterment of Children,” where they will focus on the improving the educational opportunities for the children in their homes who come from dysfunctional families. More than 50 % of them have gone without education for a long time due to poverty, lack of documentation or neglect.  Presently, Shelter Homes run three homes - one for young children (boys and girls) from ages of 4 -12 years: another for teenage boys  and a third for teenage girls (ages 13 -17 years). Earth Week 2012

Earth Week 2012 will be a week long event with booths and programs targeting different sectors of people for each day; ie. NGOs, Universities, Corporate Companies, Government Bodies, Green Companies. It will be a built up event until the last day, 22 April, when we will encourage all participants including the public to walk for Green and to have a full day celebration with performances and programs in conjunction with Earth Week 2012.

The highlight for this Earth Week event will be the Pledges themselves. 12 Pledge trees will be built as the centerpieces of the Space U8 Mall using recyclables by 12 corporate companies representing the Year 2012. For example, they will be building the trees using beverage cartons, newspapers, used wood planks etc. Participants will write their chosen pledge for Mother Earth on a piece of card (also made from recycled paper) and this card will be pasted on the ‘Pledge Trees’ signifying branches/leaves of the trees. The 12 Pledge trees will be there for the full 7 day event for program participants and for the public to pledge. Our target number of participants and pledges made for this event is 100,000 Pledges.

The xtramilerun is an invitation to invite the community and corporations to go the extra mile for the less fortunate. For the first time, StART Society is organizing “The Extramile Run” to raise funds for the StART Society’s Music and Dance Programme which will benefit some 200 underprivileged children to build their artistic and creative skills. Our hero runner, Alex Au-Yong will be running all 100km on that day. You can support through pledging your donation online. Every RM10 is equivalent to 10 meters.

Run for A Ray of Hope, is part of the Health Fiesta which is organised by the medical students of the National University of Malaysia (UKM). The purpose of this Charity Run is to raise funds for patients who are in need of financial support for their treatment in PPUKM, Cheras.

In conjunction with the run, there will also be a health campaign which will be held from 13 - 14 November, with booths available for free health screening, health education, health talk and health consultation. Several NGOs (such as Federation of Reproductive Health Associations, Malaysia, Pink Triangle Foundation, Malaysians AIDS Council and National Cancer Society Malaysia) will be giving health education on that day.Besides, Pusat Darah Negara is welcoming everyone to donate blood on the day of event.

IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING

Familiar with that phrase?

What is it? . . . . . . . . . . something to do with Shoes? I bet the first word that come out of your mind is ADIDAS. And you are darn WRONG!

This is about two youths aged 22 & 19 from the Supported Living program for youths with learning disabilities under the umbrella of Dignity & Services (D&S).

Wai Keen & Qi Han have been attending the program for almost 3 years now while Effendi joined D&S as the program coordinator since early this year. When both of them were told that I'll be raising fund for D&S during the 2nd Putrajaya 12Hour International Walk, they both volunteer to take part in lending me the moral support. It is also part of their effort in giving back to the organisation. Effendi has been kind enough offering his time to keep both of them company by taking part as well tho' he has never been an athlete himself.

The society always perceived that persons with learning disabilities are a burden but they failed to understand that given the right guidance, opportunities couple with dedication, they can actually lead a normal life like any other people. Both had followed me and took part in some road races - Klava Relay, Pacemakers Network Track Meet, Kingston Charity Walk, Orange 11km run & JW Dignity Relay. Wai Keen also took part in the JW 21km Christmas Island Run in 2008. And they ran alongside ordinary people! (I have been a friend & volunteer of D&S since year 2002)

So, when they were told about this 12Hour walk, without hesitation they both volunteer to be part of the event. They started training dilligently 2 months prior to race day.


They arrived at 7pm sharp at Putrajaya. I briefed them on the rules & regulations and off they go at 8.00pm sharp with the rest of the crowd of more than 650 walkers. As I have to complete a minimum of 45km in the fundraising challenge, I really have no time to waste & dare not even take a long break in the 1st half of the race.

I am truly proud with them. While many were quick to form a line for food, they both persevere & only stop when necessary for a quick bite or to rehydrate. Each time when I had the opportunity to pass them, I will asked if they are doing OK & how many laps they have done. Each time I received the same answer -

I'm OK

Don't worry, everything under control.

Its a small matter only.

26 laps..... not a problem lah . . . . .

Wow . . . . unbelievable. I didn't hear a single complain from them. By 6am I saw them at the baggage tent. Yeah . . . . . they are calling it a day. Mission accomplished! By now they are just too sleepy and needed their 'bed'.

So how do they performed?

Effendi - 30 Laps

Qi Han will be leaving for Australia in late January 2010 to further his education while Wai Keen just completed his secondary education and taking on a new challenge in 2010.

Good Luck to both of you. I am confident that both of you will excel in your future undertakings and you will always have my support. Go forward & face the world with your head held high! I am proud of you both.

RELAY FOR LIFE 2008

While some runners went down south for the Sundown Marathon, Alice, her twin teenage daughters & friend and myself decided to do something different. My 2nd Relay4Life, Alice and myself decided to do more than just contributing rm10. We went round to talk to our friends that for every rm10 donated by them, we will dedicate one loop on their behalf to all cancer survivors.

In less than a week, we managed to collect rm600! Thats the challenge! 60 loops on MSN track, Bukit Jalil ...... gosh ..... the real challenge is we cannot stop or leave unless and until we completed the 60 loops.

This year, more people participated. When Alice signed in at 6pm, there wasn't any more t-shirts left. Just coincidently, Alice and her daughters was in yellow, the color they adopted this year. So, they brought out a bundle of T-shirts (for volunteers) and handed them to Alice while apologised for not being able to give us the actual quantity. Well, we are there to support and not the T-shirts so we just took whatever available.

So, at 9pm we join the full crowd on the track! Fuyoh .......

Saturday wasn't really an easy day. I am dedicated to a program in Taman Tun Dr Ismail known as OPTIONS - a basic living skills program for teenagers with learning disabilities from 17 years and above. After taking the youths out for a short walk around the few blocks of houses in Persiaran Burhannudin Helmi, we took a short break and by 6pm I excused myself from the program. Managed to feel up my stomach with a bowl of fried rice bought by one of the parents. Took 10 minutes walk to the nearest bus stop heading towards KL Sentral.

7.30pm reached KL Sentral, then jumped onto a cab to be home by 8pm. Dumped my bag and took a quick bath and rushed to the LRT station which is 3 minutes walking distance. I arrived at Stadium MSN at 8.40pm. Alice met me at the entrance to passed the wrist tag to me. All the speeches and presentation just finished. The emcee requested that family members of cancer survivors, friends and supporters to join all cancer survivors on the track. So, was just on time for the WALK!

These lighted bags represented all the inner voices of their loved ones. As I slowed down towards the end of the last round, I just kept walking ..... passing one after another around the track. It's so touching, one can almost felt the warmth and love all around.

Cancer - your existence may have separated our loved ones from our side BUT you can never take that memory away for THEY will always remain in each and every of our heart .....

CHARITY GARAGE SALES

FONET is one of the networking group under the National Association of Women Entrepreneur Malaysia (NAWEM). We decided to hold a Charity Garage Sales in partnership with Dignity & Services (D&S). FONET under the leadership of Alice Tan who produce swimwear and beach wear has been organising a few events this year to provide a platform for women to interact and network among the group.

Early this year, the group decided to organise a charity event as part of our social activity. As one the member I took the opportunity to garner their support to raise fund for D & S. I've been a friend and a part time organiser of D & S for the last 8 years. A non-governmental organisation, D & S champion the rights and dignity of people with learning disabilities.

And so, the sub-committee of FONET decided to embark on a garage sales on 25 May 2008 at No. 45, Medan Burhanuddin Helmi, Taman Tun Dr. Ismail which currently is running the OPTION, a program to teach youth from the age of 16 onward on basic living skills.

For the last 3 months, we sent out emails to all members and started collecting all kind of items for sales. The sub-committee appointed me as the project leader as I had the experience in running a garage sales. However, all members contributed towards the success of the project. We also got the green light and blessing from the EXCOs of NAWEM.

So, we set out to face the eventful day - printing of banners, brochures, t-shirts and advertisement in the Star paper. All these will not be possible if not for the help put together by all the ladies. Alice provided meals, Althea was our publicity and media committee, You Von who contributed quite a substantial amount of items, Mimi is our finance lady and not forgetting the twin girls of Alice who had done a great job to ease our workload. Of course their entrepreneurship come naturally from their mother!

Sales due to start at 10 am, a group of serious buyers already waited at the gate since 8 am. Finally, after some final touch up we open the gate for sales at 9.40 am.

In less than 2 hours, more than half the items in the house was taken up. Wow! We did not anticipate such an enthusiatic crowd and were really glad with the turn up. There was something for everyone - young and old.

By 1.00pm, we managed to raise RM1,200, another RM800 to reach our target. The night before, I was a little worried and not too sure if we could sell half the items especially the huge bundle of used clothing and bags. But by noon, I was confident of reaching our goal!

True enough, by 4pm - BINGO! This truly made my day! By now, there is only a handful of items left. We took a break and had our meals and tea. I saw those satisfied look in the faces of the ladies. A big THANK YOU to all the ladies, the youths, the parents especially Wendy and Ooi Loon, Jeya of D&S and all those who had contributed directly and indirectly to make this event a success!

Thank you Alice for leading by example. You have been most helpful, understanding and a true leader. You make us proud to be part of FONET!
