SCKLM REACHES 10,000 ENTRIES



MORE THAN 16,500 RUNNERS HAVE REGISTERED FOR STANDARD CHARTERED KL MARATHON THIS YEAR

Normal registration period to end 15 May 2011


Kuala Lumpur, 4 May 2011 – The Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2011 is expected to break another record this year. To-date, less than two weeks before the closing date of normal registration period on 15 May 2011 at 11.59pm, the organizer has received registration from more than 16,500 runners and is confident to break last year’s 17,500 entries soon.

Besides Malaysia, runners from 68 countries have also registered their participation in this race, exceeding the organizer’s initial target of runners participation from 45 countries. The organizer is targeting for 25,000 runners this year, comprising of local and international runners

The 3rd running of the nation’s largest annual marathon is scheduled for Sunday, June 26, 2011 with the first flag raise at 5 am for full marathon runners at Dataran Merdeka.

“We are very pleased with this overwhelming response we received to-date, especially from Malaysian runners. For full marathon category alone we have recorded 20% participation increase compared to last year. This clearly solidifies Standard Chartered KL Marathon as the biggest and a truly Malaysian running event where everyone, regardless of age, experience, or background, can run and have fun together,” said Rainer Biemans, Project Director of Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2011.

The normal registration period has started from 1 March through 15 May 2011, with registration fee for Malaysians RM 45, RM 60, RM 65, RM 70 for 5km fun run, 10 km run, half marathon and full marathon, respectively.


Besides the above, the organizer is also still opening registration for the followings:


- Corporate Challenge – More than 25 companies have registered participation for the Corporate Challenge, including Genting Malaysia, IJM Corporation and FIAMMA Sdn Bhd. The last has committed RM 10,000 to the Standard Chartered Trust Fund. The Corporate Challenge is a platform for companies to compete in the race as a team, while also giving back to the community by raising money for charity.


- Volunteers – More than 700 people have registered as volunteers to help support the Standard Chartered KL Marathon this year. For the 2011 event the organizer is looking into 1,000 volunteers to help monitor the race route and distribute beverages to runners, among other activities throughout the race.


- Cheering competition – students nationwide are encouraged to form a team and register themselves to participate in the cheering competition, an integral part of this annual race. The most vibrant, creative, dynamic and energetic team even stand a chance to win great prizes.

Even those who are paid as TAs and have tuition waivers typically only make enough (if they are lucky) to get by.
